Sample Salem Witch Trial Warrant

To the Marshall of Essex or his deputy;

There being complaint this day made before us by Edward Putnam and Jonathan Putnam, Yeomen, both of Salem Village, against Rebecca Nurse, the wife of Francis Nurse of Salem Village for vehement suspicion, of having committed sundry acts of witchcraft and thereby having done much hurt and injury to the bodies of Ann Putnam, the wife of Thomas Putnam of Salem Village] Anna Putnam, the daughter of said Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams, etc.

You are therefore in their majesties names hereby required to apprehend and bring before us Rebecca Nurse, the wife of Francis Nurse of Salem Village, tomorrow about eight of the clock in the forenoon at the house of Lt Nathaniel Ingersoll in Salem Village in order to her examination relating to the abovesaid premises and hereof you are not to fail.

I have apprehended the body of Rebecca Nurse and brought her to the house of Lt. Nathaniel Ingersoll where she is in custody

(Reverse) in the meetinghouse be Mary Walcott, Mercy Lewis, Elizabeth Hubbard

All these accused Goody Nurse then to her face that she then hurt them, and they saw besides the others on Contra Side

Sample Salem Witch Trial Complaint

Complaint v. Mary Lacey Sr. , and Mary Lacey, Jr.




Joseph Ballard of Andover, husbandman, complains of Mary Lacy, wife of Lawrence Lacy of Andover, and of Mary Lacy, daughter of said Lawrence Lacy of Andover aforesaid, singlewoman, as follows: that whereas this complainers wife, Elizabeth Ballard, has been this several months sorely afflicted & visited with Strange pains and pressures & remains so to this day, which I verily believe is occasioned by witchcraft and have cause to suspect the above mentioned Mary Lacy and her daughter Mary to be the actors of it, and accordingly enter this, my complaint against them, and acknowledge myself indebted to Our Sovereign Lord & Lady the King & Queen one hundred pounds current money of New England, on condition to prosecute this my complaint to effect as the law directs

In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand this 19th day of July, 1692
